Core concepts
The handful of terms you'll meet in quickS3, from organisations and connections to buckets, prefixes, and roles, explained in plain language.
Organisation. Your team’s workspace in quickS3, with its own people, connections, roles, and audit log. You can belong to several and switch between them at the top right. Nothing is shared between organisations.
Connection. A link to one storage account, such as your AWS account or a Cloudflare R2 account. It holds the provider details and the access key quickS3 uses. Only Owners manage connections. See storage connections.
Bucket. A top-level storage container at your provider. Azure calls them containers. One connection usually has several.
Folder and prefix. Buckets don’t really have folders. A file’s full name, like reports/2026/summary.pdf, includes its path, and quickS3 shows reports/ and 2026/ as folders. In rules, a folder is called a prefix.
Organisation role. Owner, Admin, or Member. It decides who runs quickS3: who can invite people, manage connections, and read the audit log. It doesn’t give access to files, except that Owners can reach everything. See Owner, Admin, and Member.
Custom role. A named set of rules you create, like “Finance reports”. Each rule allows or denies Read or Write on a bucket, or a folder inside it. People can have several custom roles. See create a custom role.
Allow and deny. Nobody can reach anything until a rule allows it, and a Deny rule in any of someone’s roles always wins. See how rules work.
Invitation. An email that brings someone into your organisation with the roles you picked. It expires after seven days.
Share link. A public download link for one file, with an expiry from one hour to 30 days. Anyone with the link can download that file, without an account. See share a file.
AI client. An app like Claude Code or Codex that you connect to quickS3. You pick which of your custom roles it gets and for how long: 30, 60, or 90 days. See AI clients and quickS3.
