Preview files

Look at images, PDFs, video, audio, tables, and text files without downloading them, and which file types quickS3 can preview.

Owner Admin Member

Select the eye icon at the start of a file’s action icons. The preview opens over the file list. You need Read access to the file.

What can be previewed

KindFile types
ImagesJPG, PNG, GIF, WebP, SVG, BMP, ICO
PDFPDF
VideoMP4, WebM, MOV, AVI, OGG
AudioMP3, WAV, FLAC, AAC, M4A, OGA, Opus
TablesCSV, TSV
TextPlain text and logs, Markdown, JSON, and most source code files

For anything else, quickS3 offers a download instead. Whether a video actually plays also depends on your browser: MOV and AVI files often use formats browsers can’t play.

Limits on big files

To keep your browser responsive:

  • Text previews show the first 1 MB of the file.
  • Table previews show the first 200 rows and 50 columns.

A note tells you when a preview is cut short. Download the file to see all of it.

Markdown previews don’t load images from other websites. They show “External image blocked” in their place, so opening a document can’t quietly contact someone else’s server.

Previews aren’t safety checks

quickS3 doesn’t scan files for viruses. A file that previews fine can still be harmful to open on your computer, so treat unexpected downloads, especially documents with macros or programs, with the usual care.

If previews fail but downloading works, the bucket’s CORS rules are probably blocking the browser. An Owner can fix CORS.
